The EPA’s proposed revisions to open burning practices fall short of meaningful impact

The Radford team is dedicated to advocating for banning open burn and open detonation (OB/OD) practices that harm the health and environment around the Radford Army Ammunition Plant (RAAP). We submitted a public comment to the EPA regarding their proposed revision to OB/OD regulations. We discuss how the EPA’s proposed rule falls short of meaningful impact on human health, we review best available science regarding how OB/OD impact cancer rates, and we provide our own recommendations for improved OB/OD policy.
